EASIS Data Eraser

According to the description offered by EASIS, the EASIS Data Eraser application should be able to permanently erase data stored on hard drives, partitions, or portable storage devices. Using this application should be as easy as one, two, three. One, select the drive you want to wipe. Two, pick a wipe algorithm. And three, wait for the wiping process to complete.

Unfortunately, EASIS Data Eraser didn’t work as advertised during my tests. I used this application on multiple computers and every time I asked it to wipe my USB stick, it delivered an error message which said "SQL Error: Can’t connect to MySQL server on easis.com." Why does a wipe tool even need to connect to a server?

Here’s one other thing that bothers me about EASIS Data Eraser: the fact that it hasn’t received an update in years. On the bright side, at least installing it is a simple enough task: download an installer, run it, and then follow the instructions presented onscreen. Not that you'll want to install something as old as EASIS Data Eraser.

EASIS Data Eraser has a wizard-like interface that will guide you through all the steps you need to take to wipe a drive or partition. Step 1, select the drive that you would like to wipe. Step 2, pick one of several wipe algorithms. Step 3, launch the wiping process and wait for it to complete. If it completes, because it failed to do that during my tests.
